Food and wine are an important part of French culture and are taken very seriously by the French people.
Many food-related practices are completely different from what you are familiar with back home, but still can be very enjoyable when understood. As the French take eating very seriously, lunch is long and dinner is longer. If you need to eat a quick meal, get it to go because French waiters do not like to be rushed.
In France lunch is generally eaten between 12pm and 2pm, and dinner between 7:30pm-9:30pm.
You shouldn’t expect the same level of service as in the US. In France, the waiters don’t come as often to check how your meal is going.
The billing is different. Indeed, “service compris” means that the tip is included in the bill. It is common to leave a few euros on the table as a tip.
