Perfecting your Spanish

One of the greatest benefits of having a homestay or shared flat with Spanish speakers is that you can practice your Spanish all the time. It is up to you to take advantage of this opportunity.

Your EUSA Program Director has many worksheets that you can use, and many helpful ideas for you to practice. Get in touch with her if you’d like to know how you can get your housemates to help your Spanish skills.

Here are suggestions to get you going:

  • With your host family or housemates place Post Its on objects around the house with their names in Spanish and in English so that all of you can pick up some new words.
  • Watch TV together and ask them about what you do not understand - not only in terms of vocabulary, but also in terms of general knowledge - this way you’ll learn more about what’s current in Madrid.
  • If there is an older member of the family in the house, offer to read to him or her the newspaper out loud - this way you’ll improve your pronunciation and also learn about what’s going on!

Don’t forget that the people you live with are very valuable resources, and making your experience a success depends upon your mutual good predisposition for creating a positive living environment.
