Your permission to remain in Spain is the entry stamp the customs agent stamped in your passport when you arrived.
Students who will be in Spain for over 90 days will need to have applied for a student visa in their home country before the start of the program. This visa grants the student the right to enter the country and to apply for a student card for the length of their stay.
There are two types of Visas one that allows you to stay in the country as a student for 180 days and another type that allows you more time.
Upon arrival most student visas allow a period of 90 days to register with the local police and apply for the student card. (Please check the number of days printed on your visa; on occasion some consulates issue visas valid for 180 days).
Please do not be confused about this process. The student visa will indicate that you have been granted permission to stay for the length of time that you requested, but regardless you will have 90 days to complete the next step.
The next step will be clearly explained in the orientation, but it consists of acquiring a letter of enrollment, tuition, and health insurance from your program director. With these letters as well as completed application form, visa, passport and three passport-size photos you will need to go to Calle General Pardiñas, 90 Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm and apply for your student card.
You will need to return to the police station at least once to be fingerprinted and to pick up your card.
