London Fashion says “Wear dark socks.”

London is a big city like any other – so you’ll find all sorts of styles and fashions about town. You may find you love some and loathe others, but whichever the case, you’ll see that the British really do make an effort with their personal appearance. You should too if you want to blend in with the locals! It’s advisable to leave your college sweatshirts and baseball caps at home. When in doubt, dark colours are ALWAYS in style, and dressing in layers is the best way to contend with the unpredictable British weather!

A few definites

• Appropriate work and play attire (for work, contact your Placement Manager)
• A small backpack or large tote that zips
• Towels (kitchen/bath; sheets are provided)
• Any prescription medicine you will need during the term, prescriptions for glasses/ contact lenses, etc.
• An umbrella, rain jacket, and waterproof shoes
• Laptop (if you have one already) and electric converters/adaptors if needed
• Copy of your CV (electronic and hardcopy)
• A camera
• Your passport, student visa, and insurance card

A few no-no’s

• Two full suitcases (try packing two half-filled suitcases) space is at a premium in housing.
• 1,000 Toiletries (unless you MUST use a very specific brand, you will find an extensive selection of toiletries in London)
• Anything you would be upset to lose
• American electrical appliances such as hair dryers or straighteners. Higher voltage will ruin them

Keep in mind:

Every airline does have weight restrictions- be sure to double-check how much luggage you are allowed to bring on the plane. If you’re flying more than one airline, make your luggage meets the requirements for all carriers.
