Useful Vocabulary

Be careful! Sometimes “French from Switzerland” can be different from “French from France”. Here are a few words to help you get by:


English: Swiss French (French from France)

70: Septante (soixante-dix *in French from France)

80: huitante (quatre-vingt *in Frencn from France)

90: nonante (quatre-vingt dix *in French from France)

Plastic bag:  cornet (sac plastique)

Receipt: quittance (reçu, note)

Café latte: un renversé (café au lait)

Breakfast: Déjeûner (petit-déjeûner)

Lunch: Dîner (déjeûner)

Dinner: Souper (dîner)

Cellphone: Natel (téléphone portable)

To park: Se parquer (se garer)

Sale: Action (promotion)

A straw: une bûche (une paille)

A gum: un chiclet (un chewing-gum)

Bless you: Santé! (à tes souhaits)

You are welcome: service (de rien, je vous en prie)
