Michael Thornhill, Ph.D.

Academic Director

Michael joined EUSA in 2004. He holds a D.Phil. in Modern History from St. Antony’s College, Oxford, an M.A. in International History from the London School of Economics, and a B.A. in International History and Politics from the University of Leeds. He was a member of the History faculty at the University of Oxford and served as Research Coordinator and Reference Editor for the New Dictionary of National Biography. His research interests include British and American foreign policy, the politics of the Middle East, and the history of popular music (in addition to being Academic Director, he is EUSA’s resident expert on punk). He has written numerous scholarly articles as well as contributing pieces for the Times Literary Supplement, BBC History Magazine, The Times (London), and Egypt's Al-Ahram Weekly. His book Road to Suez: The Battle of the Canal Zone was published in 2006 and his latest research project is on King Farouk. When he isn’t teaching, publishing, or spending time with his family, Michael enjoys listening to live music.
